A Time for Unity Not Division

unity

Hello everyone,

After receiving an email from the University regarding this past week’s events that have had a devastating impact on many communities on local, national and international levels; I felt compelled to mirror their message and spread it further.

It has been a week since the tragic events in Paris and Beirut and today we learnt of the hostage situation in Mali which has claimed the lives of at least 18 people. The media coverage and debates on social media has not diffused the increasing tensions both at home and overseas.

However now is a time where we need to be united and come together as a University Community. To quote from the email I received:

“Now more than ever our Swansea University community needs to look to support each other, to understand and be sympathetic to the pressures each of us face as we deal with our own fears, frustrations, confusion and, possibly, anger…Terrorism aims to divide community cohesion by promoting fear and suspicion of others making groups and individuals vulnerable in many different ways”.

“Let us not allow that to happen to our precious community here”.

This is a message that I support whole heartedly; events such as these have far reaching effects for a vast number of people at different levels, therefore, my thoughts are with everyone who has been effected. Hopefully, through continued unity and support we can put an end to acts of terrorism.

Thank you for reading.
