and the Future

¡Hola y bienvenidos!

Bueno aquí estoy para hablarles un poquito sobre mi experiencia aquí en Colombia. Lo que he aprendido y como puede afectar mi futuro. Listo, ¡comencemos!

Right, this year I’ve been living with my mother’s family. Though that’s quite a different experience in contrast to your usual year abroad, I still think you can pick up a thing or two!

Bueno aquí están las cosas que he aprendido…

Don’t put your heart in it, and Expect the Unexpected

Many things happen on your year abroad, some good, some bad, but it’s probably for the best in the end.  Well, at least, it seems like it has been for me personally. These are some of the things I really did not see coming if I’m honest:

Initially I thought about how much money I would have/need for this year; for that reason I spent quite a bit of money. However I completely forgot to think about next year, and needing to pay for a place to live. Consequently, when I finally realised this I had to completely stop spending money! This however, meant I could only buy the essentials, thank God that I had family to fall back on though! They taught me to cook more things and rent wasn’t particularly high either.

I admit I was limited in the things I could do, which hit me hard, thankfully I accepted it eventually. Due to the fact it taught me to budget and be a bit more responsible, I do see the a bright side to the experience so for that too I’m grateful.

I guess the life lesson is, don’t put your heart into the experience you hope to have, expect the unexpected, and budget well. May sound like a bit of downer but, trust me, it allows you to enjoy your year abroad no matter what you get. Besides, you find new things to do when you’re bored.

Dynamism & the Bright Side

This is definitely a biggie I learnt this year, you have to be dynamic.

Due to certain issues, I’ve had to learn to work with design and video software. Oh, and I’ve also been involved with a few low-end video and design projects among other things. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nothing fancy or anywhere near professional, but it’s definitely been extremely fun to do; I’m truly glad to have learnt so many new things out of it as well. It’s also helped me build on so many different skill sets and resources. In addition to this, I’ve also ended up with a small portfolio that goes nicely on my CV so it’s been pretty great. Oh, and not to mention I’ve definitely gained a much greater ‘can do’ attitude to things.

Trabajar con niños pequeños

Trabajar con niños pequeños es una lotería: unos días puede ser muy divertido, y otros días puede ser muy difícil. Sin embargo, creo que es una experiencia muy buena. Antes de mi año en el extranjero, estaba considerando la opción de ser profesor, y es una ventaja muy grande poder tener la experiencia, que definitivamente me ayudará a tomar la decisión correcta cuando llegue el momento de decidir si lo quiero hacer o no.

También le abre a uno los ojos a la cantidad de trabajo que se necesita para planear una clase. No le crean a la gente cuando digan que mantener niños pequeños entretenidos es fácil, ¡de verdad que no lo es!

El futuro

Pues después de las experiencias que he tenido este año siento que tengo más puertas abiertas en mi vida laboral. Siento que también he madurado mucho como persona y que estoy aún más preparado para el futuro.

En mi opinión, tengo varias opciones para trabajar en diferentes sectores. Cuando termine mi carrera en derecho y español voy a tener la opción de un futuro en muchos diferentes papeles laborales dentro del derecho. También voy a tener la opción de utilizar el español para ayudarme a conseguir un trabajo como profesor, o algo diferente en el sector internacional. Igualmente puedo viajar y tratar de hacer lo mismo con el inglés. Finalmente, después de aprender a manejar programas de diseño, videos, y aplicaciones, puedo buscar trabajo en ese sector. Aunque sea difícil de hacer, creo que es posible, y me fascina la idea.

Sin embargo pienso que voy a seguir adelante con el derecho, de pronto si el tiempo me lo permite puedo hacer algo que tenga que ver con el diseño fuera de mi horario de trabajo.

Lo bueno de esta experiencia es que me ha demostrado que puedo ubicarme en otro país e integrarme en otra cultura e idioma. Igualmente me ha hecho descubrir nuevos gustos, como mi pasión por la tecnología, y me ha hecho madurar en muchos aspectos y formar y mejorar muchas competencias y habilidades.

Reflexión

Mirando atrás a este año que acaba de pasar ha sido muy interesante, para mí personalmente porque he vivido con mi familia y he visto cuan diferente la cultura es aquí. La familia es algo muy importante en Latinoamérica y pues pienso que es algo que podemos aprender de esto en el Reino Unido. No quiere decir que todas las familias sean así, pero he notado que en el Reino Unido la familia, es obviamente importante, pero no he visto el esfuerzo en reunirse tanto como en ciertas familias aquí.

Al ver esto, creo que cuando tenga la bendición de tener una familia propia, me gustaría hacer el esfuerzo para reunirla.

También este año me ha hecho reflexionar y llegar a la conclusión de que yo no aprovecho el tiempo para estar con mi familia. Admito que debería al menos tratar un poco más, considerando que todos nos llevamos bien. Honestamente, no tengo excusa para no hacerlo.
