¡Hola! Just a little bit about myself, my history, some memories, fun facts and a bit about my family.

Mi nombre es Juan Carlos, pero es más fácil que me llamen Carlos. Además siempre he pensado que Carlos Cruz suena como el nombre de un famoso. como un actor o un futbolista. Entonces lo prefiero la mayoría de las veces.

Nací en 1995, el tercero de los tres hijos de María y Juan Carlos.

Sí, mi padre y yo tenemos el mismo nombre, y solamente para confirmar sus sospechas…

Fun Fact número uno: I am going to call my first child Juan Carlos as well. It is confusing enough when someone calls my name because dad and I don’t know who they’re calling. Imagine if there was a third person!

Siguiendo con la historia, nací en Bogotá, Colombia. Crecí allí hasta que tenía cinco años. Después me mudé con mi padre, mi madre y mis hermanas a Tiptree, Essex, Inglaterra.  En el 2008 volví y me quedé en la casa de mi abuelita por un mes y medio. Vi a mi abuelita y a mis primos y primas, tías y tíos como si fuera la primera vez. Esta fue una experiencia extraña para mí, porque casi no me acordaba de nadie, solamente algunos nombres y caras. Sin embargo, todos me conocían y tenían muchas historias de cuando yo era pequeño.

Fun Fact número dos: When my sisters and I got to the stage when English became easier to speak than Spanish. The moment mum heard us speak it at home, she went nuts. She stopped us speaking English at home. To be fair, this helped a lot in the long run.

Mi madre nos prohibió (a mis hermanas y a mí) hablar inglés en la casa por unos años. Pero finalmente se rindió y seguimos hablando inglés en la casa entre nosotros. Entonces, cuando mis hermanas, mi padre y mi madre estamos hablando, mis hermanas y yo les hablamos a ellos en español y entre nosotros hablamos en inglés. Entonces para poder estar en una conversación con nosotros necesitas los dos idiomas.

In 2014  I went to Colombia, which had just qualified for the 2014 World Cup (yay). Everyone was going pretty crazy about it. All my cousins from the youngest to the oldest filled the Panini world cup sticker book. It’s such a big thing in world cup years. People will form groups of like 40-50 people, maybe even more, in random places. They trade, sell and buy stickers. Kinda wished this happend in the UK.

Fun fact número tres: Okay, guilty as charged. I tried filling in the sticker book too. I spent more money than I should have had on that, and I didn’t even get to complete it. Still doing it this year though (2018). I’m actually gonna complete it this time round though, hopefully!

The reaction to the world cup is very different in England. When England qualifies it’s expected, so people aren’t that excited about it. However for Colombia this was huge… like really, really huge. I think that Northern Ireland, Ireland, Wales and Scotland would  get the feeling.

Fun Fact número cuatro: En Colombia los futbolistas de la selección colombiana son como estrellas de Hollywood. Uno los ve en la televisión, en revistas, incluso hay novelas escritas sobre la generación de oro de los años ’90.

Hay un tema muy grande en Colombia, Latinoamérica y partes de Europa, y sigue creciendo: el aprendizaje del inglés. Hace diez años, uno de mis primos estaba aprendiendo inglés, y era el único. Hoy en día todos mis primos están tratando de aprenderlo. Porque ahora cuando uno va a una entrevista de trabajo, la mayoría de las empresas demandan el inglés como requisito. Es tan importante el tema del inglés como segundo idioma que las universidades no dejan graduar a sus alumnos si no pasan la clase de inglés.

I’d like to talk a tiny little about Colombian or Latin culture. There is a lot of importance given to a girl’s fifteenth birthday. I mention this because recently it was one of my little cousin’s birthday and I had the chance to see my first quinceañera (which is like a sweet sixteen at fifteen). Long story short: we celebrated that for like two weekends, which isn’t the normal thing to do, but oh well. We spent one weekend in a resort in Girardot and another at my abuelita’s house. Fue muy divertido porque una parte grande de la familia estaba ahí y vinieron los mariachis y había mucho pastel, jaja.
