Faith, football and flamenco in Huelva! (LingoMap)

¡Hola otra vez a tod@s! Ya pasó un mes y es hora de escribir otro blog. ¡Qué rápido ha pasado el tiempo! Desde el ultimo blog, he estado en varias aventuras: de viaje por el sur de Portugal en el Algarve y descubriendo varios pueblos y ciudades en toda Andalucía. ¡Realmente aquí no hay tiempo para aburrirse! En este blog, nos concentraremos en la cultura regional. Puedo aseguraros que en Huelva no falta ningún tipo de cultura. Entonces…¡vamos al blog!
Riqueza cultural
La cultura de Huelva es muy variada, de seguidores religiosos inspiradores a fanáticos de fútbol intensos, a los que se suma la importancia de la música, la danza y el canto. Esta ciudad nunca deja de sorprenderme e inspirarme con su cultura.
Religious importance
Some of the most incredible sights I’ve seen here in Huelva come from the city’s prominent importance of religion. The city and surrounding areas are filled with churches and you will never walk too far without spotting a religious plaque carved into a wall as you walk through the centre. The majority of onubuenses (do you remember this word?) live and breathe for not only la Virgen (Mary) but also idolise a large number of Santos and Beatos. A few times now I have been walking down the street and have been met with large brass bands followed by large processions and the strong smell of incense. Seeing this truly is breath-taking every time – I always get lost in the moment watching the procession walk by.
Durante una semana, del domingo 25 de marzo al domingo 1 de abril, tendrá lugar la celebración religiosa más importante: Semana Santa. Afortunadamente, me han dicho que las mejores celebraciones son las de la provincia sureña de Andalucía. Sin duda, este es una de las herencias más importantes que tiene España: data del siglo XVI, cuando la Iglesia decidió presentar la historia de la Pasión de Cristo en una manera fácil para la gente. ¡Tengo pensado estar en Sevilla los dos domingos!
¡Viva Recreativo!
Un hecho interesante sobre Huelva es que tiene el club de fútbol más antiguo de España, ¡fundado en 1889! Todo gracias a dos británicos que trabajaban en las minas del Río Tinto de Huelva. El club se estableció para asegurar que los mineros pudieran mantener su estado físico. Interesante, ¿no? El apoyo de este equipo está claro día tras día en la manera que los hombres, mujeres y niños caminan por las calles con las camisetas de fútbol con rayas azules y blancas… ¡y ni hablar del día del partido! La atmósfera dentro del estadio es genial! Ya he estado en dos partidos y quiero ir a más. ¡La atmósfera dentro del estadio es genial!

Anybody who visits Huelva will instantly see the musical culture of the city. It is everywhere. The streets at times can be filled with the music of street performers playing musical instruments – this is one of my favourite things about walking through the city centre. In Huelva, it seems that everybody can sing, dance and perform flamenco music. I find it so magical. You could be in a bar with live music and I can guarantee you’ll be the only one sat down as the men and women find dancing partners and all begin dancing the same flamenco dance routine. It truly is a show! Also, from my bedroom, I regularly hear (right as I’m writing this, to be exact) a Spanish guitar being played outside a restaurant bellow with the others sat at the table singing along. It’s such a stereotypical image to some back at home maybe, but it is truly worth being kept awake at night for!
An annual Flamenco festival is held in Huelva in October – of course I had to see what it was about. One of the highlights was watching a group of guitarists play whilst singers took it in turns to sing what sounded like songs filled with emotion. The songs of flamenco obviously tell a story. I would recommend anybody to have a look at some examples – I will link some bellow.
The love for flamenco starts from a young age here – as around 80% of all young girls I’ve met have told me they have ‘clases de flamenco esta noche’ when I ask what they’ll be doing after school that evening!
