The ups and downs and concrete slabs – An environmental blog (LingoMap)

¡Hola! Bienvenidos a mi blog sobre el medioambiente.

Carlos here, or Juan –still up to you! Anyway, I’m here to talk to you about the environment. As you may have guessed. Well, I was pensando that I could split this topic into dos secciones. The first section will be about the environment as in el lugar, the second one will be the environment as in las personas. Enjoy! 😀

The environment as in el lugar

Well, to start things of, I feel like I have to say that Bogotá’s got its ups and downs, but deep down I think there’s something really special about it. I think one day people will see it for themselves, so don’t take my negativity on certain topics too seriously.

The good, the bad and the flowers

Bogotá has some very beautiful nature spots despite it being a big city; I feel it’s something very common to South America. It might just be me but there’s nothing quite like walking down the street and seeing all the different types of flowers you see here, or opening your windows in the morning and seeing the mountains. It may not be the seas of Swansea Bay, but it’s definitely a welcome change of scenery. Which if I’m honest would be perfect if people didn’t litter so much; I guess that’s a

global problem rather than a national one. 😔

Sorry for the image quality, but here’s some flower pictures. 🙂

Anyway, food: you will see street food vendors everywhere, it’s the best thing in the world! There’s so much variety that, well, you really have to fight the temptation to stop at every food cart on the way to wherever you’re going. The same can be said for the bakeries, they’re a pretty big deal here! They have a top page on Trip Advisor. So, basically, don’t worry! You’re always close to a park, a shopping centre or an arepa or bread. Due to this, your local food stand also becomes a place to socialise.

Moving on, there are dogs everywhere. They’ve kinda replaced children, not gonna lie. More on this later. So, yeah, you will see a lot of pet shops or at least pet food shops everywhere you go… Along with a bunch of vet clinics and accessory shops for pets. It’s at times like these that I miss Hendrix.

Mind the step

I always find it’s the little details that make the picture. So, bearing that in mind, there’s not much out of the ordinary when comparing Bogotá with Swansea or Chelmsford, but it’s those little details that change the experience. In this case, I feel like one of those details have made this a painful experience; that detail being: the slabs on the side walk. They aren’t very firm in some places, so you smash your toes a lot, or you trip a lot! On the plus side, my awareness has risen, but my poor toes really did suffer in those first few weeks. Also, after it’s rained, the pavement becomes like a water minefield. Step wrong and you got yourself some cold feet for the rest of the day. Bear in mind it’s not like this everywhere, though.

The environment as in las personas

El fenómeno

Pues hemos llegado al “more on this later” que les había anunciado.
