Welcome to Swansea

Hello all

It has been a while since I last posted, but I have been really busy with work and so have been working a lot and have not really got anything too exciting to report.

However, I am aware that A Level results were released yesterday and I wanted to say Congratulations to everyone who got their results and will be coming to Swansea in September.

There is a number of little bits of information that I would like to share with those who will be joining Swansea University in September, especially if this is your first time away from home.

1. Check the accommodation website as they give you some great advice, and suggestions about what sorts of things you should pack and take with you to university. However, a few things that may not be mentioned include a sleeping bag (this is always handy especially if you are going to have friends visiting and staying with you and it is good if you will be visiting others), also I would suggest a basic set of kitchen utensils (this does not need to be an expensive set as this may get lost or damaged).

2. Slightly linked to number one is bringing some of your own food. I made this mistake in my first year of university as I moved in on a Saturday evening and had no food of my own as I assumed that I would buy some from the local supermarket, unaware that the nearest supermarket was miles away. So I had to wait until Monday to eat some real food, so make sure you have something (even if it is a ready meal) to hand to eat for the first few days until you get to know the local area.

2. University is not all about drinking. Most people do think that University life centres around drinking and while there are some social events that may involve drinking but there are also activities that don’t involve drinking. For instance last year the University organised a trip to the Gower where we were able to see Rhossili Bay and Caswell Bay. This was a great day and it was lovely to be able to socialise with my flatmates while being sober.

3.Try something new. Swansea prides itself on its sports, but there are a number of other clubs offering a wide array of activities for students to get involved in. Whether you like Rugby, swimming, athletics, baking, films or even Harry Potter there is a society for you. Get involved, it is a great way to meet new people.

4. Have fun and embrace University. University is about learning but it is also about developing as a person; becoming more independent, meeting new people and embracing new experiences. Make the most of the experience.

Once again, congratulations on coming the Swansea! We will see you soon.
